TikTok Provides The Community Control to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

TikTok is introducing a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the amount of AI-made media appearing in their feeds. This move comes as the company revealed that it currently hosts over 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

This change is being tested over the following weeks before a full-scale rollout. This shift comes amid a rise in AI content, driven by new AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing channels on a popular video site only show AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this output is deemed mass-produced AI material, a term for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers enjoy content made with AI tools, from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we want to offer the community the option to adjust the amount of that, based on their own choices,” stated a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The service shared that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app labeled as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 m videos are submitted to the app each day, making clips made by AI a minor portion of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be in a position to decrease or raise the amount of artificial media they watch by using the “manage topic” option in the platform and choosing “AI-generated content”. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the tool include politics, fashion, beauty, and movement.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s guidelines mandate content makers to identify convincing AI-made content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the service will from now on add an “AI-made” watermark to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an cross-platform project for spotting AI-generated material. This action is intended to deter users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore introducing a $2 million AI literacy fund for specialists and groups to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will assist educational bodies focused on educating computer science.

Platform Protection

TikTok has defended its moderation strategy, amid discussion over proposals to make redundant a large number of content moderators in Britain. It is set to eliminate a significant number of roles in its content moderation division in London, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that people are being substituted by automated systems.

A trust and safety lead clarified that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but AI can protect employees by filtering out the most graphic content ahead of it gets reviewed by humans. The company stated a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

It is vital to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s very important to minimize viewing of unsafe media as rapidly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us operate efficiently.”
